As this world is getting more interactive by the minute we think about how-might-we make science activities more fun while kids are learning?

UNDERSTANDING THE BUSINESS
To find the better solution to the pain points that adults and kids were dealing with when learning science, I carried competitor research. These corporations were analyzed: KiwiCo, TuWas!, and Kleine Forscher.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER
USER PERSONA: Children age 6 to 10 years old.
PAIN POINTS
  • Science isn’t a subject until 5th grade
  • Elementary teachers are not trained to guide science experiments for young children
  • No access to the material for the experiments
  • No access to modern technology in elementary schools
INTERVIEW INSIGHTS
HOW IT WOULD WORK
I drafted a Storyboard to understand the kids' journey in interaction with the product.
BUILDING A CONCEPT
To build information architecture it was essential to follow stakeholder´s requierements: a simple Site Map and that the kids would not need to enter personal information (such as their names) so I come up with the solution that the teams would choose an Avatar and access to their dashboard to see their progress and accomplished tasks without needing to log in.
USER FLOW
The user flow is straightforward so the kids can follow easily. More than 30 kids tested the app in person and using Maze. Results validated the user flow: the kids could manage the app in a natural intuitive manner. The engagement is created between the children and the character who guides them through the application.
VISUALS
Defining the Brand Attributes was essential for building the personality of the app. The visuals needed to be fun and bright as the games that kids' already play with the tablets are focused on keeping their attention by using animations. This is when Gamification comes in.
The idea of choosing the videos in an animated solar system is attractive for children because they are fascinated by topics about the universe.
The Progress Bar is one of the most important containers so that the kids can trach the knowledge that they gained. It Shows the videos watched (circles), the percentage of the achieved activities and the proficiency level as they learn. Being able to see their progress keeps the kids engaged with the activity.

TAKEAWAYS
Designing children is a very different challenge than designing for adults. There is a lot of games and applications in the market for children but with many approaches as the interviews are very difficult to carry. On the other hand, they are willing to test the product over and over again because they are very curious about digital devices. Last but not least, it was a lot of fun!
